Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is becoming more and more common as a mobility solution to many cities around the globe. It delivers fast, comfortable and cost effective mobility service that are comparable to the metro. The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) has created an evaluation tool, The BRT Standard which is based on international best practices. The first publication, from 2014, has been recently updated reinforcing basic elements for bus rapid transit. Updates include an increased focus on safety and operations, separate scores for design and operations, and improved definitions of right-of-way, new busway alignments, and onboard fare validation.
The BRT Standard scoring system was created as a way of protecting the BRT brand and offering recognition to high quality BRT systems around the world. Certifications of gold, silver, bronze, or basic sets an internationally recognized standard for the current best practice for BRT.
The BRT Standard is the centerpiece of a global effort by leaders in bus transportation design to establish a common definition of bus rapid transit (BRT) and ensure that BRT systems more uniformly deliver world-class passenger experiences, significant economic benefits, and positive environmental impacts.
BRT plays an important role reducing transport sector emissions in cities worldwide. While private vehicles is still mainstream in most cities, emission from these vehicles continue to grow. There is a need to shift mobility by providing quality public transport alternatives to citizens. It is therefore important to establishing a quality standard for BRT which not only ensures that better projects are built, but that transport sector emissions are reduced.
The report showcases three EcoMobility Alliance cities that have successful BRT systems in place: Bogota, Buenos Aires and Mexico City.
Ranked Gold: The TransMilenio, in Bogotá, Colombia which introduced high capacity BRT and is able to move people equals or more than many metro systems. The corridor has 13 kms and has 120,000 users per day.
Ranked Silver: The Metrobus of Buenos Aires, Argentina has a corridor that makes effective use of public space. A system allows buses with right side doors to use the open corridor and buses drive on the left. The corridor has 3.5 kms and has 255,000 users per day.
Ranked Silver: The Metrobús of Mexico City, Mexico has high quality buses and stations, frequent service and good connections to Metro stations. The corridor has 17 kms and has 140,000 users per day.
