After Freiburg was destroyed during World War II, it was rebuilt re widening the streets for a tram track and following old street map and architecture. Since 1969, the city made the first integrated traffic management plan and cycle path network aiming to improve mobility and updated every ten years. Since 1972 , the tram system is improved and has now 30 km with 70% of the population living in walking distance to a station. There are around 400 km of bicycle lanes in the city with the supplementary 9,000 bicycle paths. Between 1982 and 1999 the cycling mode increased to almost the double. For the future plans, the “traffic development plan 2020” includes more pedestrian interventions, bicycle traffic interventions and improvement of city public transport.
