“Making Space for Mobility in Booming Cities”
MOBILIZE is the annual sustainable transport summit of the Institute for Transportation and Development (ITDP), which brings together urban transport and development practitioners alongside world-class researchers to celebrate best practices and accelerate implementation of sustainable transport projects.
Over the last year, Dar es Salaam has launched a series of transformative improvements to transit, cycling and walking, the most important of which is the Dar es Salaam Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, or DART. These efforts have made Dar es Salaam the first African city to win the prestigious Sustainable Transport Award in its 14-year history.
Dar es Salaam, host of the third annual MOBILIZE summit, is one of the fastest growing cities in the world. It is projected to expand from a population of 2.7 million in 2005 to 6.2 million in 2025 and could reach 21.4 million people by 2052, according to the African Development Bank. As of 2017, it already is home to an estimated 5.5 million people. This rapid urbanization offers many lessons on how to pilot mobility innovations, leap beyond some of the errors cities in other regions have made and find new ways to accommodate the surge in residents. Participants to this invitation-only summit have a unique opportunity to experience Dar es Salaam, a trailblazer in the African region.
